This wasn't my first time being at Metal Box to try their food.

I once came here with a friend but I can't recall what I had and how it tasted. I guess the food wasn't that really memorable.

So today, I came as a lone diner to give my evaluation on it. Since coming on my own, this means that I concentrate more on the food and the taste and also the sole intention of coming here to do an anonymous review.

Despite being dinner time, I opted for a breakfast for my dinner. Oh, the irony. LOL. The manager and the staff were so free they were trying to pull customers into the place but during my time there, I saw more going into the Korean BBQ restaurant opposite than into Metal Box. I guess the draw of beer promotion is strong over there. Haha. In fact, during my time there, there were no new customers that stepped in at all! LOL.

The wait staff were very eager to serve me and after waiting for awhile, he swooped in and ask for my order. But I told him to gimme more time to make my decision as I glance further on the one page menu and took a photo of it with my trusty phone camera. In the end, I ordered the Specialty French Toast (which had the word signature in parentheses next to 'em.) So if it's their signature, it should be good, right? That's what I thought.

Seconds from my order, the Green Apple Juice appeared as if it was beamed to me from skyward. I wonder how they managed to concoct such a juice in such a record time. But, it didn't taste of anything funny nor fishy. It's quite a pleasant juice made from real green apple with some sweetness in it and some saltiness in the mix. Over time, the sediments tend to sit and float to the top where it looks like mangled green algae that's thrown into clear water. Don't mind my unpleasant description of it. There's really nothing wrong with the Apple Juice.

Not long after my Green Apple Juice arrived at my table, the French Toast too came after a short while.

The Specialty French Toast is of course, French Toast that's coated with Nestum and pan-seared till golden brown. It has a slab of mixed berries coulis at the side and a shot of Gula Melaka (Coconut Palm Sugar Syrup). The looks of seemed very inviting making me look forward to it. As I dig into the French Toast, I found that although it's being coated with Nestum and pan-seared with it, it did nothing at all to the taste. And here I was excitedly thinking that it would be like eating the raw Nestum which I did as a child giving it much flavor. This however, tasted like a normal bread.  The mixed berries coulis also looks nice but when I bit into the berries and the one piece of dragonfruit, they were far too riped but still edible. A day or 2 into it and I think it would've gone rotten. But nonetheless, it was meant to be a coulis and the sauce of it was fine, just fine. Dousing the French Toast with the Gula Melaka was probably the best way to make eating this dish more pleasurable, making it sweeter and nicer to the taste. Else, it will just feel like you're eating a plain bread.

Total Wallet Damage:
RM30.10. Specialty French Toast is RM16.90 and the Green Apple Juice is RM8.90. There's service charge 10% and GST of 6%.

Final Verdict:
5/10. I'm not sure is it because I'm having a bad day (which by the way, the day wasn't that bad) or my taste buds had went to sleep. But everything just didn't taste as much as it should be. It's all just so plain Jane. But it wasn't all that bad. It's just that there's other options in the vicinity that would probably be better.
